Description
Loretto College Secondary School Hosts Give Peace a Dance March 11, 2010
Loretto College hosted the 5th Give Peace a Dance campaign against school violence in and around school communities on March 11, 2010. It was another successful night of music, beat boxing, spoken word and dance.
Loretto College’s Empowered Student Partnership (E.S.P) committee with the support of 13th division officers Tony Santeramo and Franco Zaffino organized another Give Peace a Dance. The purpose of this event was to continue raising awareness on violence that can happen in and around our school communities such as bullying, cyber-bullying, physical violence, etc.
We were fortunate to have some great guests volunteer their time to support this cause. The evening began with our two hosts, Laith and Marlon who came in the top 3rd and 4th as part of Canada’s Much Music V.J. search. We also had the opportunity to witness some great talent from beat boxer Scott Jackson and Q-mack who collaborate and tour as part of the “Increase the Peace” tour. A well known singer/songwriter Kim Davis and P.G duff from the Remix project performed a variety of songs. Guest dance groups included Genesis, Rated Inc. and Maniacs of Dance. Loretto College students and dance groups from TCDSB and DCDSB school boards were the featured events. The collaborating schools were Dante Alighieri Academy, Marshall McLuhan C.S.S, Monsignor Percy Johnson C.S.S and St Mary’s C.S.S from Durham region.
Tickets for the event were $10.00 and some of the proceeds went to LOVE – Leave Out Violence and the Remix Project. Both of these programs work with At-Risk Youth through arts and media.
Overall the goal of Give Peace a Dance as a safe school event is simple. We hope this project will promote a positive step forward. Ultimately it is the students who will be the best leaders and ambassadors of the shift towards peaceful schools. |
